Bladder Sludge

Rabbits (unlike humans and most other species) cannot adequately control their calcium absorption and, as a result, the calcium forms solid crystals which are excreted through the urin in a cloudy sludge. This condition is known as bladder sludge. Some factors that may increase your buns risk for developing this harmful condition include:

Obesity

Inactivity

Decreased hay intake

Symptoms of bladder sludge include:

  • blood in urine

  • frequent urination in small volumes

  • white crystals in urine

  • dried sludge on the behind 

How can I prevent this?

You can take the following specific actions to help prevent your bun bun from developing this harmful condition:

Increase water and fresh greens intake

Eliminate packaged treats and alfalfa

Keep the environment sanitary and increase exercise
